More skills to master .. try them

Hold her own in the presence of a car mechanic – well, I guess this requires a bit more, but wouldn’t it be nice to actually tell when he’s saying something that’s absolute junk, and you could tell him that? So learn about your car, and read a manual once in a while – it’ll be amazing what you pick up.

Pitch a tent - this is too easy these days, the tents cone with poles that just about make themselves, and tents that erect themselves too. You can do it in 30 seconds or less. Do it anyway, it’ll make you feel good.

Say no – often. When you get older, you realise that a well positioned no can save you years of pain and persecution.

Give her opinion - I guess l’m doing that here. Also, I am pretty good at giving my own opinion. Even when it’s not really needed. That’s not always a good thing, so I’m not advising that, but I am advising that you should speak up. Your opinion counts, and you’ll be amazed how many people actually agree with you!

Put flat-pack furniture together – another feeling of achievement best felt after the deed is done. You feel like you actually created something!

Cultivate male friendships – it’s nice to have lots of girlfriends, but men add a different dimension to a friendship, and are less emotional about situations. Their perspective can give you perspective in some situations.

Be single – lots of women find this amazingly scary. I’ve found it a really enlightening experience. It allows you time to do stuff you’ve always wanted to do (climbing was one for me) and to do it when you want with who you want. You can be selfish and not feel bad about yourself.

Know what 'her' karaoke song is – as in ‘your’ karaoke song , if you are a woman reading this. Mine is optimistically “It’s Raining Men” – I’m hoping visualisation really works.....
